Depending on conditions on the day and the trail type, this may include walking on uneven, rocky, and rooted mountain trails with some elevation gain, or crossing a river over wet, slippery rocks and wading through water. The tour also includes short walks to sightseeing spots along the way. Ishigaki’s interior and its coastline are closely connected. The same geology that created the island’s mountains and rivers also shaped its beaches, cliffs, and viewpoints, and walking through these different landscapes in one day shows how they relate to each other rather than feeling like separate stops on a list.
The island’s terrain changes quickly. In a short distance, you can move from dense forest trails to open farmland, then to coastal roads with views over the sea. Mountains like Mt. Nosoko Mape and Mt. Omoto sit inland, while rivers flow down toward mangrove areas and the coast. This mix of mountain, river, and coastal environments is part of what makes Ishigaki different from many other islands, where the landscape tends to be more uniform.
Beyond the main, well-known trails, Ishigaki has a number of smaller paths, river access points, and viewpoints that are less visited but still offer rewarding scenery. Some of these spots are only reachable by combining a short walk with a drive along quieter roads, which is part of why they tend to stay uncrowded. With years of exploring the island’s roads and trails, we have built up a working knowledge of these locations and how conditions there change with the seasons, which helps us choose where to go on any given day.
Because this tour moves through several different types of environment — from forest trails to coastal areas and viewpoints — conditions can vary a lot within a single day. Trails may be muddy or slippery after rain, while coastal areas depend more on wind and tide. Planning routes based on the day’s actual conditions, rather than a fixed itinerary, helps keep the experience both enjoyable and safe across these different settings.
Moving through forest, beach, river and coastal access points means crossing through different ecosystems in one day. The same logic that gives Ishigaki its natural beauty also makes it sensitive — overuse, dirty water, or poor conditions can affect both the trails and the reefs we visit elsewhere.
Much of the terrain we hike sits within or near the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, one of Japan’s protected subtropical ecosystems. Respecting these areas, packing out what we bring, and traveling lightly are all part of how we keep Ishigaki’s nature enjoyable for the people who live here and the visitors who come after us.

Yes. The half-day option runs about 4.5 hours with 1 to 2 hiking locations and 1 to 2 sightseeing stops.
The full-day option runs about 6.5 hours, includes 1 to 2 hiking locations plus 3 to 4 sightseeing stops, and adds lunch.
Choose the half-day if you want a shorter outing, or the full-day if you want more sightseeing and a relaxed lunch in one day.
It depends on your group. We adjust every hike, so it can be very easy or moderate. Your guide chooses the day’s route with you — whether a mountain viewpoint climb, a jungle river trail, or a gentler walk through Banna Park — based on your group’s fitness level, comfort, and what you’d like to do.
Most guests on this tour are not experienced hikers, and the goal is an enjoyable pace, not a physical challenge. If you do want a more demanding route, let us know when booking.

For children under 12, our Family Tour is a private tour where we adjust the activities and pace to your kids ages.
Clothes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty, walking shoes or sandals, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, etc.), a small towel, and cash for the tour payment. Snacks and a reusable water bottle are optional.
Everything else, including water shoes for river hikes and drinking water, is provided.
