Snorkeling in Ishigaki isn’t just fun — it’s a rare opportunity to observe wild green sea turtles in their natural habitat.
Our eco-friendly snorkeling tours take you into the heart of the Yaeyama coral reef (Sekisei Lagoon), where shallow reefs provide feeding and resting areas for green sea turtles throughout the year.
Glide above coral gardens where green sea turtles are often seen calmly grazing on seagrass and algae or resting near the reef. These reefs are also home to vibrant tropical fish such as butterflyfish, clownfish, surgeonfish, triggerfish, and angelfish swimming between the corals. On occasion, you may also spot a hawksbill turtle passing through, along with rays and other reef species.
Marine life changes with the seasons as well. Depending on the time of year, you might encounter giant cuttlefish during their fascinating mating displays or schools of fast-moving trevallies hunting together. Every snorkel offers a different and memorable experience.
This underwater world is beautiful but fragile. Sea turtles and coral reefs depend on a healthy environment to survive. That’s why we follow responsible snorkeling practices — and ask you to do the same:
✓ Don’t touch turtles or the reef – Both coral and turtles are sensitive and easily stressed.
✓ Float calmly above the reef – Never stand or kick your fins against coral.
✓ Keep a respectful distance – Allow sea turtles and marine life to move naturally.
✓ Leave everything in the ocean – Shells, rocks, and sea life belong where they are.
✓ Use reef-safe sunscreen – Regular sunscreen can harm coral and marine ecosystems.
By snorkeling responsibly, we can help protect Ishigaki’s green sea turtles and coral reefs for future generations.
